"No Longer Forgotten"
Rocky's Story

Hi Folks,

My name was Enzo, now it's Rocky, and I'm a handsome standard male Eskie. I was found wandering around a local shopping mall very close to a very popular intersection. I was noticeably hurt, limping pretty badly and favoring all four of my legs. My appearance was very ragged, my coat a filthy mess and my eartips very flystricken. I could barely stand much less hobble to safety.

I would not allow anyone to come near me and would bear my teeth, growling very menacingly if anyone tried to come close to me. Thus, I was ignored and left for dead by the general population passing that area.

A nice man pulled up and very patiently took the time to try to make friends with me but I didn't trust him. After a half hour of trying, the nice man took matters into his own hands and very boldly grabbed me by my middle section and picked him me up, while at the same time I was trying to bite him.

I could not sit, could not run, nor could I even walk properly. Riding in the car was very uncomfortable and I kept falling to the floor area, and growling if the nice man tried to help me. This good Samaritan stopped at a pet store and purchased a muzzle so he could work with me easier, and then proceeded to take me home where his fiancée met him at the door. They promptly dumped me into the bathtub and gave me a bath.

After the bath I perked up a little. Although I was in extreme pain, I decided to make friends with this nice couple and their female dog (non-eskie). I hoped they would help me. They gave me a warm pillow to lie on and lots of food and water, which made me feel like a king.

I wasn't housetrained and was peeing all over the house so the couple made a bed for me outside and kept me there all the time. Since my legs weren't working so good, I couldn't manage the steps from the back door to the patio nor could I reach the doggie door so I was content to just stay in the backyard. I couldn't keep up with the other dog, and sitting/lying down was a big chore due to the pain. My tail stayed down regularly and I could barely lift my rear leg to pee. It appears I was hit by a car, although there is no evidence of any blood.

Meanwhile this nice couple had a vet look at me but the vet explained that I needed lots of tests and expensive x-rays to determine the extent of the damage. And of course, this nice couple could not afford all that. So they called a nice rescue lady from Heart Bandits and asked for her help. They gave me to rescue because they wanted to see me get better. They actually cared for me!! Too bad they could not afford the tests and xrays.

Ms. Lori Pasch came and met me, took one look at me and promised to make me all better. I didn't trust Lori at first so I growled, but after a few minutes I realized she was a nice person, so I let her take me away from the nice home I thought was mine. Again, riding in the car wasn't too easy for me. I fell on the floor again and didn't want to let Lori help me, but she was patient and it worked out. I didn't like to be lifted up as it hurt too much. Then Ms. Lori muzzled me also (hence the one picture) so that I wouldn't bite her.

She promptly took me to the local animal shelter whom she works closely with and asked them to use some kind of gizmo to scan me to see if I had a microchip inside of me, so they might identify who my owner is. No such luck! That's okay because I wouldn't want to return to my previous owners anyway since they didn't take very good care of me!

I am now living with Ms. Lori and several other rescues who look just like me and I'm trying to make friends. I think I like this place as she keeps reassuring me that everything will be okay and she'll make me feel all better.

Another visit to the vet! He took a look at me and determined I have no broken bones but will need xrays to determine the extent of the damage. He also saw how hard it is for me to move so he said he will give me something to help with that - I like that! Off I go to a back room with other nice people but I still don't trust everyone yet so I'm a little growlie with the staff just to say "Hey Stupid - I'm in pain in and you'd better not hurt me!" They didn't - instead they made me nice and comfortable and gave me some medications to feel better. They told my rescue Momma to come back in a few days. Off Ms. Lori went hoping for the best.

Two days later (I think) Ms. Lori came and picked me up and was told that there was nothing that could surgically be done to help me move better. The xrays had determined I had developed severe Arthritis throughout my whole body, which was causing the limping/hopping. This was not a hereditary condition but rather a medical finding that may have developed due to lack of proper care and diet over the past few years. Wherever I came from it had not been good and they had not taken care of me properly. So for the remainder of my years left I will have difficultly moving and getting up and down. However, the nice man did say he could help and gave a prescription for some meds that make feel much better. He also said to make sure my diet had some Glouclosesimine and Chrondrotin in it for the muscles/joints and to keep me on Rimadyl initially to see how well it goes.

Time has passed and the medicine really seems to be working. I'm much happier and friendlier. I still limp/hop around but I can now run and walk much better. I'll never be able to be a "normal" eskie again but I can now keep up with some of the younger ones and don't feel as bad. It is still difficult for me to get up and down, hence I stand a lot but when my legs tire out I flop down and get as comfortable as I can. My whole demeanor and attitude has changed since I feel much better! I love my new food and like having a well balanced diet that is healthy for me. I'm fitting in great with all the other eskies in rescue that look like me and I get along with everyone. Ms. Lori takes me to all the adoption events in the hopes of finding me MY forever home. I don't even mind having all the kids pet me. I am comfortable and loving life at the moment.

Ms. Lori gave me a new name - "Rocky" and I like that much better! I haven't felt this loved and safe in a long time. Thank you EskieFriends for all your support and generosity. I appreciate it more than words can express! My bill is $423.82. Thank you EskieFriends in..Giving Life A Second Chance.
