"No Longer Forgotten"
Fritzy's Story

Hello, my name is 'Fritz de Spitz' but I'm
often referred to as 'Fritzy' for short.
I'm only 1 1/2 years old and weigh 25 pounds.
I came to the animal shelter with an injured
left rear leg, which usually would classify
a dog as unadoptable and place my name on
the evening "Pull" list. My charming
personality and the sympathetic (and albeit,
defiant) technicians of the Franklin County
Animal Shelter in Ohio, however, saved my
life and found me a ticket into rescue. Whew,
that was a close call!
Forgotten 4-Paws of Lancaster OH rescued
me. 4-Paws is an all breed group, but they
have rescued several Eskies in recent months,
especially when other rescues couldn't/wouldn't
take them. This group is wonderful! Yep,
simply....wonderful!! I'm SOOOO happy they
saved ME!!! All of their dogs come from pounds
where they would be put down if not rescued.
Check out their available dogs at:
http://www.forgotten4-paws.org/dogsadopt.html
My left rear leg (yes ONE leg) is broken
in **4** places! You should see the xrays!!
The surgeon says it can be fixed but will
be costly...maybe $2,000-2,500!!!! If my
leg is not repaired, my leg will be amputated,
and I'm NOT in favor of that! The rescue
group had to weigh the cost of surgery to
repair, against the less expensive amputation.
They hate to make this choice, but they also
have to think about the number of other animals
they can spay/neuter with that amount, so
it is a hard decision. I say SAVE THE LEG.
This is where you EskieFriends come in.
| My Fosterparent describes me as bubbly and
fun, and comments daily on my unbreakable
spirit. Even in the face of my shattered
left rear leg that has dangled in pain for
months, I'm a real trooper. Maybe it's because
I was thinking this pain was "normal".
Within the most recent months, my leg has
begun to heal according to the laws of nature
and gravity, otherwise described as misaligned
and crooked, leaving my left rear leg considerably
shorter than my right rear leg and therefore
very unbalanced when I try to maneuver. However,
I continue to try to live life to its fullest
and greet every person with a wiggling body
and wet kiss on the cheek. |
 |
I've learned to get around pretty well by
hopping on three legs. I'm even able to keep
up with those clumsy puppies in our backyard
game of chase! However, I am still reminded
with every step of my injury, as the bones
grind together when they slide past one another
and the splintered ends poke the skin that
overlies them. While amputation of my left
rear leg was considered, the volunteer who
rescued me has decided that I deserve the
chance to keep my leg and try to make a complete
recovery. So, with the help of an incredibly
talented surgeon, and all of us praying for
lots of donations, I hope to keep my leg!
I will be undergoing the rather complicated
surgery of open reduction of a fracture that
is already attempting to heal. That's why
I am going to see a special surgeon ... this
is not just your everyday fractures needing
fixed!! And I'm not the everyday Eskie...I'm
special!! Teeheehee! Ok, ok...I know....ALL
your Eskies are special too!
While I know the road to recovery will be
a tough one, I'm hopeful that someday, somehow,
I will be able to use my leg again, walking
free of pain and running faster than the
wind. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to keep
up in the big dogs' game of chase someday.
Wouldn't that be GREAT! It sounds like heaven
to me!
UPDATE: I had my surgery and I still have
my leg!!! My surgery took about 2 1/2 hours
but about 5 minutes of that was "neuter"
time. Dr. Barnhart didn't want me to be put
under anesthesia twice. The surgery was very
involved, more so than Dr. Barnhart had anticipated
by looking at the xray. My fracture was at
least six months old with several inches
of callus (proliferative bone growth) surrounding
each of the four most severe breaks. The
callus was broken down in each spot. My leg
was put in traction for a good hour to try
to stretch out the contracted muscles and
allow for realignment of the bone. My leg
was plated under traction to try to maximize
healing potential. Each fracture site was
then packed with bone graft from the callus
that had been chiseled away. The muscles
were re-aligned and the 6 inch incision site
was stapled close. Post-op xrays were impressive
to say the least ... I may even get FULL
LENGTH OF MY BACK LEG AND FULL RANGE OF MOTION
... wow, what a blessing! I was in SEVERE
pain for the first 24 hours after surgery,
requiring a morphine drip to just keep me
sedated enough so I didn't try to move, and
to ease the pain. I have responded well to
Rimadyl since FosterMom brought me home.
I am such a little trooper! Even in the midst
of the pain after my surgery, I still managed
to drag my little body to the front of the
cage to kiss my wonderful FosterMom on the
cheek and lay my head in her hands. I think
my FosterMom is really falling for this little
gorgeous *ME*!!!! Wonder how much it will
take for her to keep me??? Oh well, I KNOW
she will make sure I get a loving home. After
all we have been through, we have a special
bond. Only the best will do for me!!
