November 2002 Dogbowl Payout: Mindy

Mindy's Story

Somehow I ended up at the Muskegon County, MI shelter. The rescue folks who sometimes help out with dogs like me were both full up and out of funds. The shelter people contacted Sandra Marsh. They told her that not only did I have a broken leg and other wounds, but the shelter gives absolutely NO medical treatment for injured dogs, not even a pain pill or an aspirin!! By law I had to sit there and suffer for 7 DAYS while they waited to see if my owner showed up! This shelter handles over 300 dogs per month and the majority are gassed. Sandy knew since I had injuries, I had no chance whatsoever of being adopted, and would be gassed in a matter of days.

The rescue group talked the shelter into letting them take me out to their own vet to be checked over. It was determined my leg was not broken, but was dislocated to such a degree that it was uselessly dangling outside the socket. I also had a small pelvic fracture and various cuts. The vet said I needed immediate attention by an orthopedic specialist.

They told Sandy how sweet I was. I "took" to every human and looked into their eyes with a "Will you be the one to take me home????? I will love you forever."

I cuddled up with the woman's husband while at the vet, laid my head in his lap, and my sweetness touched his heart. Out of all the doggies in that shelter, they felt a special bond with ME! How could Sandy resist driving to come get me?

Sandy contacted the good folks at Heart Bandits IL chapter. Sandy could save me and rescue me from the shelter, but could not afford the medical treatment I needed.

On Friday, Sandy spent 5 hours on the phone calling every vet recommended, trying to find the most reasonable prices. She called places hours from me in hopes of finding someplace that would provide a reduced rate. She only had these 5 hours to find treatment or let me go to my fate.

The estimate was $1250. Sandy made a vet appointment for the next day, then drove 4 hours to get me, arriving at midnight.

The next morning I was at the vet. As we waited our turn, a tiny girl of no more than 2 waddled on unsteady legs over to me as I sat in FosterMom Sandy's lap. FosterMom wondered what I would do? Should she warn the girl off, because of me being a dog with an "unknown" temperment? FosterMom let the little girl approach and could only smile as I gently kissed the child on the lips. Vet techs busy at work at the desk paused long enough to watch the interaction, a smile spreading across their faces.

I was heartworm free (YIPPEEEE!) and had no other medical problems, save for some bad teeth and being a bit thin. The vet held me gently in his arms and cuddled me to his chest....6'5" and 260 pounds of serious surgeon....and tenderly patted my head, saying what a sweet girl I was. Even coated with oily dirt, matted gray and swarming with fleas he saw my potential. FosterMom crossed her fingers, scheduled the surgery, and hoped that the funds would be there.

I came thru the surgery beautifully! Due to neglect of my teeth, 5 of them had to be pulled, but the vet decided not to charge the extraction fees. In addition, when in surgery it became clear there was a fracture of my leg unseen on the xrays. He made the repairs by wiring the break, but later chose not to add anything to the original quote. Follow-up visits would be free too. God Bless Dr. Tinker!

Now I'm home with FosterMom Sandy. I will remain here as I heal and while we search for the perfect FOREVER home. Sandy will be heart broken when I leave, as she loves me already. Sandy says, I am "sweetness and light", "her little Mindy".

I was saved just in time thanks to Sandra Marsh. My bill is $1,283.78. The HeartBandit IL chapter is paying $500 towards my bill. Thank you Linda! YOU, my "EskieFriends" have offered to pay the remaining $783.78. Check will be mailed to my wonderful vet! Thank you ALL for giving me......a second chance at life. I luv ya! XOXOXO!
