February 2002 Dogbowl Payout: Josie

Josie's Story
Hi EskieFriends, my name is Josie. I was rescued from a shelter in Georgia. I couldn't tell my rescuers about my past, but they noticed my left eye was obviously very injured. It was huge and cloudy. On the day my fosterMom Linda DeGroff got me (12/8/01), she took me immediately to her vet who referred us to a veterinary opthamologist (VO).

My vet estimated that I was less than a year old. I tested negative for heartworm, received all shots, and was scheduled for spaying in early January. I also required two rounds of antibiotics and cough medicine to overcome a respiratory infection.

FosterMom wasn't surprised when the VO said that my eye was  damaged beyond repair and would need to be removed. I underwent "enucleation" on 1/23/02. The inside of my eye (infected and filled with fluid) was removed and replaced with a prosthesis. I still have the exterior (cornea). It looked pretty bad -- swollen, red, white, blue. The VO says it will take up to 6 months for the cornea to recover and stabilize in color. My eye will probably look cloudy -- like someone with a cataract. But, it will feel normal to me even although I won't be able to see.

FosterMom says I have been a real trouper through all this -- shots, respiratory infection, and two surgeries -- a testimony to the resiliency of dogs! The VO told FosterMom that I must have been in pain as the eye was VERY infected. I could have told him that! But, I never "showed" all this pain. It's all I knew for much of my short life, until I was rescued. My FosterMom has taken VERY good care of me. The total cost of my eye care is $492. I want to thank you EskieFriends for giving me a second chance. I am enjoying life once again.

I AM up for adoption to a loving home. I am a wonderful girl. My FosterMom loves me dearly. I'm an Eskie mix -- 33 pounds, all white, incredibly luxurious all-white coat (nicer and easier to care for than FosterMom's other Eskies), floppy ears, and a big muzzle and feet. I'm a puppy. Mom has declared 1/1/01 as my birthday. I'm FULL of energy! I'm not mean or aggressive but I do play rough. Mom says an ideal home for me would have space, a fenced yard (I love being out in a fenced yard), a large crate for when she's alone, and no children younger than 8 (she's thinks I'm too rough for younger children). The adoptive family must want an energetic youngster and be prepared to take Josie for obedience training.

If you are interested in adopting me, contact my FosterMom,

Thank you for....giving "me" my second chance.

"Josie" Eskie Hugs & Kisses, Luv & Licks,
Beautiful Josie Girl
