June 2001 Raffle to help Tara!

Tara's story

I am a petite, pretty little keeshond, about 3 years old. (We girls NEVER give our correct age!) My name is Tara…well… actually; I didn't have a name until Gone With the Wind fan Pam Hildebrand, named me after that gorgeous Southern Plantation. Do you think she chose that name for me because I am so beautiful? Because I have a will to survive? Or both? You see, I was a stray, picked up and parked in Union County Ohio Animal Shelter. I was about to be put down when a nice man from GSD Rescue took pity on me and rescued me in the nick of time. I will remain eternally grateful to him.

I was taken to Pam in Indianapolis, where I settled right in, wiggled my way into her heart and made myself at home. Pam's vet discovered that I was filled with whipworms. No wonder I was so skinny. While in for treatment of those nasty worms and for routine shots, the vet discovered that I had a heart murmur. Now I don't know just exactly what that is, but I do know that when the vet told Pam that, the room became very quiet…and everyone in it got real serious looks on their faces. That scared me. I was afraid I would be "thrown away" once again, just when I was beginning to relax and enjoy life.

I had an appointment to be spayed…but with my heart murmur, the vet said I couldn't be spayed. I would need to have my heart problem solved before I could be put out of the puppy making business…whatever that means.

Because of my heart problems I was moved to Dina Zinnes' in Urbana, IL. Pam explained to me that Dina had access to wonderful vets at the University of Illinois Veterinary Medical School. And, if anyone could make me better, they could.

Soon thereafter I went to Dr. Sisson, the top cardiologist at the Vet School. I was really frightened of all those tests and things that they put me through. But, the doctor was very nice to me, and made me feel a LITTLE less scared. After reading all the tests, Dr. Sisson told Dina that my heart is that of a dog twice my age, and one or more of the valves are very swollen. He is not sure why this is, but he is HOPING that maybe it is caused by an infection of some sort.

So I now am on 6 weeks of expensive medication. Then I have to stop all meds for 6 weeks. After that, I return to the Vet Med School for more tests. I sure hope that the doctors can fix me up.

I want so much to live a long, happy life in a home of my own. I have a lot of love to give and I want to give it to a family. There were several families who expressed interest in adopting me…. until they heard about my heart problem. They immediately decided they didn't want me. I don't understand it…'cuz I sure didn't do this on purpose!

My medical bills already are well over $600.00…and I have so many more expensive tests to go, as well as possible heart surgery. Won't you please help me by buying some raffle tickets? I need money for my treatments. I want to live!

Keesie Hugs & Kisses, Luv & Licks,
Pretty Tara
